Program purpose:  to provide specialized training to psychiatrists, psychologists, and attorneys, who are specifically named in state statutes, so that they may work collaboratively while serving as expert witnesses in criminal and juvenile forensic cases involving competency to stand trial, the insanity defense, fitness to proceed or lack of responsibility for conduct, and to assist those other professionals who are or may also be involved in these processes to improve their skills and knowledge.

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to delineate the following  objectives:  

  1. Discuss the responsibilities of forensic experts in working with attorneys
  2.  Determine information to be included in competency vs. sanity reports
  3. Identify problems in working with defendants with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  4. Describe legal and clinical concerns about evaluating competency at various points in the forensic process
  5. Discuss legal and clinical issues involved in reevaluation of competency after restoration
  6. Identify key points to consider in retrospective competency evaluation
  7. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of forensic experts
  8. Identify relevant laws related to expert testimony
  9. List (3) ways to improve expert testimony
  10. Identify potential problems in working with defendants with physical disabilities
  11. Discuss pros and cons of experts interviewing witnesses and victims
  12. Describe the impact of various cultural factors on forensic evaluation
  13. Identify techniques for conducting effective interviews
  14. Identify ethical choices in resolving challenging issues in forensic evaluation
  15. Discuss pros and cons of choices in forensic evaluation
  16. Identify potential resources to use in resolving ethical dilemmas
  17. Apply skills for making ethical choices in resolving challenging issues in forensic evaluation
  18. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of potential choices in forensic evaluations
  19. Determine strategies for making effective decisions in challenging forensic evaluations
  20. Describe (3) practices attorneys use in working effectively with experts
  21. Describe (3) practices experts use in working effectively with attorneys
  22. Discuss (3) ethical concerns attorneys and experts should consider when working together
